Standing on the edge of a vast ocean, surfboard in hand, ready to dance with the waves. Imagine that! But now picture this. before even getting into the water you are unrolling your yoga mat. Doesn’t it seem strange? If we consider an unlikely couple of peanut butter-plus-jelly for love at first sight, the combination yoga and surfing is right. Not at all strange. In fact it’s yoga surfer perfect.
Yoga for surfers isn’t just stretching or looking like a pretzel. It’s about balance in every direction. Imagine yourself riding a wave, every part of your body as still as for a tightrope walking artist. That’s where yoga is needed to come in, offering both strength and flexibility that may make or break your ride.
And then there’s the question of breathing control. Who’s ever been wiped out by a wave? It’s like being tossed around in a washing machine! Yoga teaches you to breathe through pain, helping maintain that calming serenity while you’re tumbling under the water. A surfer who can control their breath is a lot like a captain steering his ship through stormy seas.
Take, for example, the focus needed to catch a wave just perfectly. Surfing takes concentration as exact as threading a needle during an earth-quake! Yoga develops concentration, ensuring that your mind stays right on target while waiting for that perfect surge.
We cannot forget core strength now. This is the very heart (or gut) of surfing expertise! Just consider what a struggle it would be to rise up on your board if your stomach were soft–you would flop about like some creature fresh out of water. Yoga builds core muscles with postures that even the most accomplished athletes find challenging.
But it’s not all just business-as-usual! Picture if you will, for a minute; / lying spread out on your surfboard you do a Pushup Downward Dog and drift gently with the tide. Or if I were a rock music fan I might say, “Two Worlds Collide” It’s moments like these where laughter bursts out unexpectedly because hey all ready balancing on dry land is hard enough!
On those days when the waves are few and far between and conditions not as inviting as one might hope (we’ve all known this day), with yoga in place you remain connected to surfing without ever getting your feet wet. It’s like having dessert before dinner–a pleasant surprise!
Let me share an anecdote. Once upon a time in my own experience: Days after sunrise Beach Sessions were the thing. Until one day I found myself tangled up in seaweed mid-wave—which was hilarious but at the same time humbling too. That thing taught me resilience, which I came to realize is echoed beautifully within yoga—to calmly embrace imperfections rather than fight for one’s life at each step of life along this uncertain road.
And then there’s still the community aspect at work here; joining a class introduces fellow surfers who know when somebody says they “live” for the weekends out chasing swells under sunny skies or overcast horizons it means what “living” is all about. In this sense we’re all together is built beyond speech, by a common passion that isn’t adequately served by words alone.
